Phillips, Shelton in Boyz squad for friendly
Wednesday, June 03, 2009
The Reggae Boyz have been boosted by an additional five Europe-based players to the squad of 22 which began preparing yesterday for Sunday's international friendly against Panama at the National Stadium.
Playing without a number of key overseas-based players, the players gave good accounts of themselves against Haiti and El Salvador over the past two weekends.
Phillips... exciting left-sided player
Among the new invitees are the exciting left-sided player Demar Phillips of Aalesunds FK in Norway and clubmate, midfielder Khari Stephenson. Both players, who helped their club to a 2-1 win on Monday, were scheduled to overnight in London yesterday before journeying home today.
The nippy and skilful midfielder Jamal Campbell-Ryce and the emerging midfield giant, Rodolph Austin, a key figure in the Digicel Caribbean Championships triumph in December last year, are also invited. The former is scheduled to arrive with the Norway pair today, while Austin is set to arrive tomorrow.
Completing the list of new Europe-based invitees is forward Luton Shelton of Aalborg in Denmark.
Shelton arrived in the island last Friday and was a part of yesterday's 16-man squad which trained at Winchester Park.
Forward Nicholas Addlery, who scored on debut against Haiti, will arrive on Friday in search of his third cap.
Already in the island are Claude Davis, Damion Stewart, Jermaine Johnson, Jason Morrison, Wolry Wolfe and Rafe Wolfe. Davis did not train yesterday.
Following impressive performances against Haiti and El Salvador, Harbour View central midfielder Richard Edwards, the Tivoli Gardens duo of Navian Boyd and Roland Dean have retained their places in the squad.
Also returning are Adrian Reid, who stood out against El Salvador; Tivoli Gardens utility player Oraine Simpson; Meadhaven's Keammar Daley, and the Digicel Premier League's top scorer Devon Hodges.
Desmond Breakenridge of Arnett Gardens, who did not travel for the recent friendlies, has been recalled.
Full Squad: Goalkeepers - Shawn Sawyers, Dwayne Miller; Defenders - Demar Phillips, Claude Davis, Damion Stewart, Desmond Breakenridge, Adrian Reid, Rafe Wolfe; Defender/Midfielder - Oraine Simpson; Midfielders - Rodolph Austin, Khari Stephenson, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Richard Edwards, Jason Morrison, Wolry Wolfe, Jermaine Johnson; Midfielder/Forward - Navian Boyd; Forwards - Luton Shelton, Nicholas Addlery, Keammar Daley, Roland Dean and Devon Hodges
after a long english and league 1 season... people who play champions league, fa cup finals, eufa cup and so on get to use that excuse, if it was world cup qualifying they would not be on break indeed

But these GUNS and big ballers will be here for the pre-gold cup camp and the gold cup tournament. Each team are allowed to bring 23 players and i Think 19 of them will be overseas.

I think if Barnes can control Panama on the flanks, we can win this match especially in the Office. The key is to limit the effectiveness of Caceres, Phillips and Blas Perez. Also, we need some improved creativity out of the midfield. Look for a strong match from Stephenson and Austin, if given a chance. Also, we have two of the best wingers in CONCACAF in Demar Phillips and Jamal Campbell-Ryce.
We hav two great wingers this weekend but our central midfield is poor, they could have carry Hue, but the strikers are very good, shelton and the new guy, the backline is stable but we dont have any wingbacks, and i have Faith in Sawyers.

I have never been impressed with the central defense partnership of Stewart and Davis. They do not compliment each other well, I would suggest (Jamal Campbell)Ryce and (Stew)Peas on the right-side of midfield and defense.
I'm mad at Richards, he was so good in college and had an argument for rookie of the year in mls... if he could have learned to play on the left side of midfield with consistency and lift weights, he could be a lock to start for us
but the key for us is to fire shots on goal... if we get 10 on goal, no way we won't have 2 on the board by the game's end

Jamal Campbell-Ryce is just a bad-ass and plays his best ball at the office. No team ever has been able to figure this guy out down the flanks at the office. He was unstoppable against Mexico, Honduras and Canada last year. Look for him to mix-up and confuse the Panamanian defence, they will have no answer for him. The big question will be will Shelton and Adderly put away the many chances that Campbell-Ryce and Phillips will provide. Jermaine Johnson had a great game last week, so look for him to come on in the second half and create havoc for the Panamaian defenders as well. As far as Claude Davis is concerned he is not the answer. The three best Central defenders we have right now are Stew Peas Stewart, Shavar Thomas and Tyrone Marshall. These are the three guys who will start at the Gold Cup so no worries.

Addlery is a good finisher...I am not sure if JJ is 90 minute player at the international level. But if he play him in the middle protected by Austin or Stephenson, he can be very effective. JCR still needs to play better TEAM ball.
