Fianlly, after a busy day of serious posting(done know friday n mi nah do nuh work here)
Borrowed this topic from Whaddat.com forum, had some funny replies..
We're talking slacker it terms of sex-oriented lyrics.. dancehall not roots reggae, and soca not kaiso. good
borrowed these 2 responses:
engineroom dancehall wins Posted 4-25-2002 23:04
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i can't really agree with that.
first the quantity (both absolute and as a percentage of the genre) of slack dancehall is much greater than the percentage of slack soca - this is excluding "roots" reggae and calypso. I have a room full of reggae & soca records going back to the 60s that easily confirms this.
second, soca has a long tradition (from calypso) of double entendre - it takes effort and creativity to write lyrics that suggest sexual topics without explicitly stating them - reggae used to have this a lot more but the balance has shifted to just the raw-chaw business. is only a few man like lovindeer, degree and that crew still occasionally coming up with the clever sexual innuendo, think tunes like "Pianist" and "Neighbourhood".
third, almost none of the sexual innuendo in soca is violent/misogynistic/etc - dancehall can't same the same.
don't get me wrong, i'm not hating on rockers, cause i luv 99% of it including plenty slack tunes, just pointing out some facts.
i gone,

I think soca is more subtle and suggestive while the very essence of dancehall is raw and coarse. Dancehall is open and leaves nothing to the imagination.

as far as I am concerned neither are slacker. It is just that one is more accepted by people who most of them have no clue what the DJ is saying but the juss jumping up cause a carnival. dance hall itself has a brickwall infront of it, because though the rythm is good, the words are spoken with clarity and power so it is heard much more than the soca will be heard. Although mi a go pon a tangent, memba seh a cause a junior reid words george bush senior took away his visa. Bounti's song titled "look into my eyes" get banned cause a the clear and powerful message it was sending. Bottom line still it nuh matter which slacker cause both a dem slack when it comes down to slack songs.

Well I think Soca singers have a nice way of making the lyrics suggestive or ambiguos to interpretation ... Really covert slackness !
Dancehall upfront say what they want to say or what they think the people want to say !
As another ite seh One come straight ! One come sideway !

Take a trip to London Scotty...
The kids in London dont really understand all the lyrics on the dancehall scene but they still "brukout"
Anyway people, my view is that the people on the soca scene are much more approachable as well.
Dancehall is mostly just about sex, gal, homophobia, gun, badman-ism, and bling bling.... How they profess this to be ghetto people's music but if yu naw bling U is a pancout is even more confusing... And when an artist eventually come with an upliftment tune or social commentary it gets hijacked or lost.
Other communities open their minds to raggamatical issues while a lot of us close our minds to others.. Soca people love reggae. There is even soca tunes with reggae beats..
Soca tunes are mostly about sexual giratings and girls and the desire to get a girl. The girls at these functions are usually better natured and gentler and can wine better than nuff Jamaican girls who incidentally can only wine in a sexual manner as the songs them suggest but most cant even reproduce such action in the bedroom.
But thats just the Jamaican Ghetto attitude still.. They never know life beyond the boundaries of the ghetto.

It depends on your definition of slackness!!
If slackness includes "gun talk" ,"Shoot up", "bad words","Bugga or chichi man", "fire bun" then its DJ leads by a big margin.
If slackness only include music with explicit or implicit sexual connotation then you have a tight competition going on. Both types of music sends strong sexual messages. The DJ music is more explicit mainly because most DJ guys don't know how to 'sugar coat it'. There are some distinct differences though:
Most Soca artists (although in a subtle way) sing about sex and women- (example: 'Neva eat a white yet' and 'salfish') But only a few Reggae DJ artist sings about sex. Those artist that sings about sex all the time never last very long - eg 'Gun in baggy'
You only need to look at the list of DJ music that cannot be played over the air compare to soca to see which is considered slacker.
If you include the dance to the music then the gap becomes wider. The Soca whining or gyrating is suggestive and more daring but not as sexual as the whining to the reggae beat.
The whining to the reggae songs are much closer to what takes place in the bedroom -while you would have to be a rabbit to whine in bed the way you whine to the soca music.
Back in the days when I use to frequent parties and clubs, I could just go up behind any single woman on the dance floor and start dancing/whining when soca is playing. But if a 'strange' woman gives you permission to whine on her during a DJ song, chances are that you can take it 'all the way' if you play your cards right.
I find some slow songs even more sexual...but that's a differnet story....
