Man U and Leverkusen's match ended in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. That's a very unsettling result for the Red devils, as they haven't made use of the home field advantage. Now they must either win in Leverkusen or draw at least 2-2 (to force extras) or 3-3 to win outright. That's a tough proposition seeing that Utd looked very shoddy at times today and didn't take advantage at the times when Leverkusen weren't at their best. Van Nistlerooy had a couple uncharacterstic misses and had a bad first touch all day. It looks bleak, but as Fergie said after the game they drew at home with Juve in the treble winning season and won at the Delle Alpi so it's still very open, but of course that Juve draw was 1-1, not 2-2, big difference.

Press Releases:
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s goal on a penalty kick in the 67th minute was cancelled out when B. Leverkusen evened up the game.

Man. Utd. draw Bayer Leverkusen in first leg

The German side put themselves in a strong position in the Champions Cup semifinal by scoring two goals at Old Trafford.

MANCHESTER, England -- A late equalizer from substitute Oliver Neuville gave Bayer Leverkusen a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the first leg of their Champions Cup semifinal at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The two away goals put Leverkusen in a strong position for next week's second leg in Germany. But Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson remained optimistic.

But that task was made more difficult with news defender Gary Neville had broken his foot in the first half. The England defender is now in doubt for the World Cup after sustaining the same injury as good friend and teammate David Beckham.

“Unfortunately he's got a broken metatarsal (bone), believe it or not, the same as David (Beckham). It's unbelievable, absolutely incredible,” Ferguson said.

Neville was taken off on a stretcher after tackling Ze Roberto in the 17th minute and taken to hospital. It's expected his injury will take up to eight weeks to heal. The World Cup starts May 31.

United went ahead in the 30th minute with a slice of luck. Ruud van Nistelrooy crossed to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the box, and his shot took a significant deflection off the chest of Bayer Leverkusen defender Boris Zivkovic into goal.

In the second half, Leverkusen pushed forward and was rewarded in the 62nd minute. Michael Ballack ran into the box from midfield to chip a Bernd Schneider cross from the right past a wrongfooted United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.

Van Nistelrooy restored the advantage five minutes later by converting a penalty after he was cut down by Ze Roberto in the box. It was his 10th Champions League goal this season, tops in the competition.

Substitute Neuville levelled for Leverkusen in the 75th minute, finding the net after a pouncing on a rebound in a goalmouth scramble.

Influential United captain Roy Keane, who was named on the bench after nearly a month out with a hamstring injury, made an earlier than expected return to the team. Keane came on for Paul Scholes in the final 10 minutes, but his influence failed to alter the score.

Leverkusen, who is also challenging for the German league championship and in the German Cup final, took off Jens Nowotny at half time with a back injury.

Manchester United won the Champions Cup in 1999 and 1968.

Leverkusen had lost its two previous visits to England this season, to Arsenal in the group stage and Liverpool in the quarter-finals, the two teams battling with Manchester United for the Premier League title.

The winner of this semifinal will face either Real Madrid or Barcelona, who played Tuesday at the Nou Camp. Goals from Zinedine Zidane and Steve McManaman gave Real a 2-0 lead going into the second leg next week.

Nine, your confidence is admirable!!! I won't count my boys out, but I recognise it will be a very difficult undertaking. I don't think it will be 2-0 for Man U, cuz it looks like we can't contain that Bayer attack. I think it could be 3-2 either way, hopefully ours.

Lever palyed like the Brazil of fond memory with short passes and trying to walk the ball into the goal.
What a lesson they showed MenU last nite.
The prediction I made on Dec 5 2001 still holds true: NO THROPHY FOR MENU THIS YEAR!!!

Well, I predicted a ManU vs Real finals, (with real winng of course) and I am still sticking to it.

Manchester United was outplayed by the Germans at Old Trafford. The two goals that ManU scored can be decribed as 'lucky'. The wicked deflection and the penalty.

ManU now have to go to Germany attacking on all cylinders. Maybe starting 3 forwards (call up Yorke Fergie).
Bayer Leverkusen on the other hand does need to do anything to go through except defend with all ten men and prevent ManU from scoring.

Reddevil, I don't think you will see an attcking Bayer Leverkusen team on the return leg. They don't need to take that risk.
ManU on the other hand has to gamble and play a more attacking game.
I think the score will be ManU 2 Bayer Leverkusen 1.
Aggregate scores: ManU 4 Bayer Leverkusen 3.

Double B, I think the sides are mirror images of one another. Neither one can play that style of getting the 0-0 at home, they will eventually make the critical mistake. So as Fergie says, "there will be goals over there." I still see a 3-2 thriller, again hopefully in Man U's favour. But is Yorke even on the European squad? If he plays a 3rd man up front it will be Giggs, Scholes or Veron.

As for Real, what can you say? They look like they can't be stopped. I'll be cheering for whoever plays them. I'll comfort myself by remembering that the final is on British soil, Sir Alex's hometown, so if United is able to get there that may help them, they won't need to get a result at the Bernabeu.

Barca have to win big at the Bernabeu, something that would take heart and character. Those are traits I haven't seen in Barcelona for some time. Real goes through, it's a toss up between Bayer and Man U.
