It's time to exercise your brain again.... This a relatively easy one. Time yourself and see which category you fall in.
00 - 05 minutes - Extremely Brilliant 06 - 10 minutes - Brilliant 11 - 15 minutes - Very Smart 16 - 20 minutes - Smart 21 - 25 minutes - Use to be smart 26 - 30 minutes - rusty over 30 minutes - brain dead
You are give the following numbers : 1,3,4 and 6. You should use all or some of the following operator signs: '+' - addition, '/' - divison, 'x' - multiplication '-' - subtraction
to manupilate the 4 numbers to get an answer of 24.
Rules : 1. All numbers must be used. 2. Each number can only be used once 3. You can use all or some of the operators given

but guidance that nuh right, b/c you not maipulating the original 4, you are using =as an opperator sign...you have to use 1,3,4 & 6 from the outset.

Ok, I'm stumped... What's the answer B??? I checked Guidance's answer after but I'm not sure he's following the rules.

guidance wrote
3 + 1 = 4 x 6 = 24
Good try G but you are not following the rules.
You need to use each number once.
You were give the following numbers 1, 3 ,4 and 6.
If your first move is to add 1 and 3 to get 4 then you are now left with these 3 numbers: 4 (being the result of 1+3),4 (the original 4 that is not used yet and should be used) and 6 (the original 6 that is not used and should be used). You now need to manipulate 4,4,6 to get 24.

NO Reds, you can't give up so quickly.
I heard that this exact question was given to a guy when he went for a C programming job.
As soon as he walked into the office, he was escorted to nice comfortable conference room and given a single sheet of paper with this one question.
The interviewer asked him if he understood the question. He said yes. The interviewer then left the room and asked him to call his extension as soon as he figured it out.
After 30 minutes the interviewer came back and ask him if he had figured it out. He said no, but he was close to doing it.
The interviewer took the paper from him and thank him for coming for the interview but nicely told him that he was not the 'right' candidate for the job.
Poor guy got stumped before he could get a chance to show off his impressive resume....

6(3+1)=24
the answer of (3+1) equals to 4... 6 x 4 equals to 24.

Is this a purely mathematical problem? the only way we can seem to get 24 from these numbers is to
add 1+3=4 so, you have 4, 4 and 6 using up 4 and 6 by subtract 6-4 leaving 2 so now, you have 2,4 = 24

Double B, is this suppose to be a trick question or not?
This is my interpretation of the rule 3: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be used, BUT the rule didn't say use these operators only, so I assume it it ok to use some along with other mathematical operation.
Here is my solution:
1 to the power of 3 = 1
6 * 4 = 24
24 / 1 = 24
or
24 * 1 = 24
Either my method is correct or the rule 3 is ambiguous.
Do I get the C programming job or not?
Anyway seriously if I misunderstood the rules I would love another shot at the question, just in case let me know but don't publish the solution in that case.

Damn, Double B you wicked! Ok, the question says Manupilate NOT calculate so here:
6 - 4 = 2
1 + 3 = 4
Now manupilate =24

This is not a trick question. It can be mathematically worked out with all or some of the given operators. There maybe more than one solutions but I have worked out only one.
All the answers provided so far are wrong. You need to use only the operators provided and 2,4 is not 24.
Termi, forget the word 'manipulate' and substitute it with 'calculate'.
Let me give you an hint:
You will need to use the division sign twice!!

Not a trick question. Rule 3 states that you should only use all or some of the operators provided. You cannot use any other operators.
Also even if 'power' was provided as an operator, you would still break rule 2 because 1 raise to the power of 3: eguals 1 times 1 times 1. You can only use 1 once - not 3 times.
The hint provided above should help.

Unless this is a trick question there is no way u can use the division sign "twice" to get 24 using these numbers twice bearing in mind that the operations defined excludes exponents.
I gave up after seeing the hint but I'm dying to see the solution !
Damn .. seems I'm a dunce !!

OK, Let me give major hint: 1. Divide the first number by the the second.
2. Subtract the result(from 1 above) from the third number.
3. Divide the fourth number by the result from 2 above.
If you choose the numbers in the correct sequence you should now get 24!!!

Double B, the heading was a little misleading since it appears that it was a trick question, but nice one none the less! You shouldn't have given so much clues!!
Peace!
