King, Williams significant returnees in squad to face Canada

The greed for goals has forced coach Theodore Whitmore to prepare six strikers in Jamaica’s squad to face Canada next Wednesday in an enticing World Cup qualifying encounter at the National Stadium.

Strikers Marlon King and Fabian Taylor as well as midfielder Jason Morrison will make a return to the squad for the crucial game.

King returns after being sidelined by former coach Rene Simoes for three games in the semifinal round. He was unable to report for the last two games against Mexico and Honduras because of a back injury. He has scored nine goals in 15 games for Jamaica and has been in good form for Hull City in the English Premiership.

Taylor, who plays in Norway, has been in prolific form in this his first season, scoring 15 goals, while not much is known about Morrison’s current form in Hungary. He last played for Jamaica in Asia more than a year ago under Bora Milutinovic.

Veteran Andy Williams, who was not called for the last two games, returns in place of Jermaine Hue, while Morrison comes in for the suspended (yellow cards) Omar Daley.

Below is the squad:

Goalkeepers
Donovan Ricketts (Village United)
Shawn Sawyers (Portmore United)

Defenders
Ian Goodison (Tranmere Rovers)
Ricardo Gardner (Bolton Wanderers)
Damion Stewart (Queens Park Rangers)
Claude Davis (Derby County)
Tyrone Marshall (Toronto FC)
Shavar Thomas (Chivas USA)

Midfielders
Rudolph Austin (FC Bran, Norway)
Oneil Thompson (FC Nottenden, Norway)
Demar Phillips (Stoke City)
Jermaine Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday)
Andy Williams (Real Salt Lake)
Wolry Wolfe (Joe Public, TT)
Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Barnsley FC)
Jason Morrison (FC Feerncvaros, Hungary)

Forwards
Ricardo Fuller (Stoke City)
Luton Shelton (FC Valarenga)
Marlon King (Hull City)
Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids)
Dane Richards (New York Red Bulls)
Fabian Taylor (FC Nottonden)

I knew that Andy would be back, and it's nice to see Morrison.

Yup, it is strong. I think that he has also included players who will be eligible for Digicel, such as Fabian and Morrison. This is why he has named such a large squad when he can only dress 18 on Wednesday. Of course, one always anticipates injuries. It will give Barnes some up-close-and-personal time with those with whom he is not familiar.

It is interesting now that Pepe might not be able to play to see if he adds someone, or leaves the squad as is.

We still need a third keeper and one more defender.

One because Ricketts was injured so if he is hurt we need a backup for Sawyers if he is a late scratch. Also Goodison is touch and go at Tranmere.

I think that Demar Phillips will probably be used at left back, with Bibi playing ahead of him. As for Ricketts, if he can't play they will call in a local keeper to back up Sawyers. Love him or not, Jermaine Taylor will be used to replace, but only as a sub -- THANK GOD! -- Goodison, if push comes to shove. But we have enough cover anyways.

JA sould be proud that we can call up so many home-grown ballers who have made it abroad. This should be an inspiration for the younger local players.

Wow, what a talented squad; I have not seen such a talented Jamaican squad since just before the 1st WC game in France 98. I am very impressed with the selection decisions of Whitmore, if in fact he is the one really making them! I mean who would think to call up a youth like Jason Morison at a time like now, wow that’s a good eye for talent. I notice the omission of Hue, I don’t like not seeing his name in the squad, but as to the system that Tappa is using right now, I understand! He wants to win the midfield in every game we play; so he picks players who have very high work rate, and are more passers then dribblers. The one exception is Campbell-Rice. I hear that Tappa constantly tells him, pass it now! He still fits the system simply because of his work rate; he is up and down that side line like a mad man, and when he has the ball he doesn’t lose it period.

Iman am more curious to see what the formation and line up is for this game; will Tappa be looking to change things for Canada? Canada have watched tapes of our last two games to get a feel for what the Jamaican team, and playing style under Tappa is like. They know that Jamaica has changed allot since they saw us last. It will be a shock to them. They will come out very cautious and try to catch us on the counter. I suggest a 4-3-1-2 formation for Jamaica with Andy as the 1. Sub him 10 minutes into the second half and bring on King, another striker, so now we have 3 attackers. Ask Fuller to play out the rest of the game as the withdrawn striker, King and Shelton up front.

Now I am certain Jamaica will win this game, because of the options the coach has to choose from. This Cummings youth is fit and ready in my opinion; he played well with the team in the camp that just concluded. Bring him on with about 15 minutes left to go in the game, for either Fuller or Shelton, I would say maybe Fuller, and move King to the withdrawn strikers role. Jamaica should score more than 1 goal in this game, the big question is, and does Mexico have what it takes to beat Honduras at their home like they did in 2005? I think they can but it’s going to be very interesting to see hat actually takes place there.

Nice line up Tappa! This is what I always wanted to see, now if we get beat , wee can say, well we had everyone and they played out their hearts, not this half steppin thing Semoes had us doing.

peace..mi out!

Very Impressive Squad. But the question reminds, for me...can a jamaican team execute effectively when needed in WCQ game?

Guys, the Honduras game was an easy 3-0 or 4-0 game waiting to be had. Now we are here looking up at a 6 goal deficit. Mexico was a 2-0 game.

I think we will win...but, i have no visions of 5-0 or 6-0.

I think we will win 4-1 at worst or 4-0 at best...

PS: i wanna be proven WRONG PLEASE

Makes you wonder if the following players will be called for the Caribbean Cup:

Demar Stewart
Teofore Bennett
Rafe Wolfe
Sean Frazier
Stephen De Roux

"Strikers Marlon King and Fabian Taylor have been recalled for the crucial game along with midfielder Jason Morrison.

However, Taylor told later JamaicaWin.com that he is injured and will not be available for the game. He said that the JFF was made aware that he was nursing a knee injury a few weeks ago, but they probably thought that he would have overcome it by now. He said that he had not trained for the past three weeks since the end of the Norweigan League and had missed the last game of the season because he was in pain.

Taylor had been in prolific form in this his first season, scoring 14 goals in 29 games."

This is from today's Observer. Tappa is definitely talking all-out attack, so we will see how he sets up the midfield.

King, Williams back for Jamaica, Canada game

Howard Walker, Observer staff reporter
Friday, November 14, 2008

A strong 22-member Reggae Boyz squad was yesterday named by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) for the crucial World Cup Qualifier against Canada on November 19 at the National Stadium.

Striker Fabian Taylor of Norwegian FC Nottoden, veteran midfielder Andy Williams of Real Salt Lake, along with Jason Morrison of Hungarian club FC Ferencvaros, have been recalled to the team.

Top striker Marlon King of Hull City makes a return from injury and should partner Ricardo Fuller and Luton Shelton in a three-man attack revealed by coach Theodore Whitmore.

"Hopefully we are going to start all three of them because at this present moment we are looking for goals and with Marlon King, Luton Shelton and Ricardo Fuller, I don't see why we won't score a lot of goals," Whitmore said at the press conference at the JFF headquarters.

Williams, who scored against Canada in the 1-1 draw in Edmonton, earned a recall after sitting out the last two games against Mexico and Honduras.

Williams, an attacking midfielder, has replaced Harbour View's Jermaine Hue, and Whitmore explained.

"If you look at the Mexico, Honduras games and the players we called it's a different squad, suitable for the formation I want to use because it will be a totally different game against Canada," he pointed out.

The speedy Dane Richards of New York Red Bulls, who was voted Major League Soccer Cup Play-offs Player of the Week and Omar Cummings of Colorado Rapids, complete the forward line.

The talented Jason Morrison, Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Barnsley), Wolry Wolfe (Joe Public), Jermaine Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday), Oneil Thompson (FC Nottoden), Demar Phillips (Stoke City) and Rudolph Austin (FC Brann) are the midfield players.

The defence line has no surprises with the ageless Ian Goodison (Transmere Rovers), Tyrone Marshall (Toronto FC), Ricardo Gardner (Bolton), Shavar Thomas (Chivas USA), Claude Davis (Derby) and Damion Stewart (Queen's Park Rangers).

Donovan Ricketts (Village) and Shawn Sawyers (Portmore United) are the goalkeepers.

Jamaica are currently third in the table on seven points and need a win against bottom-placed Canada to have a chance of advancing to the CONCACAF World Cup final round.

Mexico lead the group with 10 points - one more than Honduras, with both teams meeting on the same day as the Jamaica-Canada game.

just cool ballaprof. Tappa needs ediat morrison to do a certain job he cant use maestro Hue to do... simple.

Cant lie. I'd have love to have seen Hue rolling with the better Jamaican ballers as I feel that would definately raise his game but I couldn't care less who plays on the 19th. As long as we make it to the next round.

I guess you and I have been checking the voygayers site \:D ...not sure if this is official but its what they have posted.

I have no idea what to make of this squad... as one of thier posters commented "crazy crazy lineup ... and with little preparation too"

As for Jackson - I just did a quick google and he has been out the last 3 games with an ankle injury so I am not sure if he will be there. I am skeptical about the squad listed as being official as some of the named players just do not make any sense.
