Many blacks seek reparations for 250 years of slavery
Three major US corporations accused of profiting from the slave
trade before it was abolished almost 150 years ago are being taken
to court by African-Americans seeking compensation for the abuses
suffered by their ancestors.

The lawsuit is the first of what is expected to be a deluge of claims
against insurer Aetna, railroad firm CSX and financial services firm
Fleet Boston.

Researcher Deadria
Farmer-Paelmann's suit contends
the three corporations were
"unjustly enriched" by "a system
that enslaved, tortured, starved
and exploited human beings".

In a written statement, Aetna
expressed deep regret for issuing
insurance policies which paid the
owner in the event of a slave's death.

It said the actions of "hundreds of years ago... in no way reflect
Aetna today".

Aetna said it had invested $36m (£25.2m) in the African-American
community, targeting areas such as education, health and other
areas. The firm said it embraces diversity and supports diverse
causes.

250 years of slavery

The BBC's Michael Voss says successive generations of
African-Americans have failed to persuade the government to
apologise or offer compensation.

Now Ms Farmer-Paelmann's lawsuit is asking for unspecified
damages, restitution for unpaid slave labour and a share of
corporate profits derived from slavery.

Her complaint alleges that the
disparities that currently exist
between blacks and whites in
the US are a product of 250
years of enslavement and more
than a century of institutionalised
racism.

A spokeswoman for CSX told
USA Today newspaper there
was "no legal basis for the
lawsuit".

"It is an unfortunate misuse of
the legal system to attempt to
address issues well over a
century old at the expense of
today's workers and
stockholders," spokeswoman
Kathy Burns said.

Research findings

Aetna made a public apology in March 2000, following research by
Ms Farmer-Paelmann that showed the firm issued policies to farmers
in the American South covering them against the death of their
slaves.

Further research by Ms Farmer-Paelmann alleges that dozens of
other corporations benefited from the labour of slaves in a variety of
industries, including tobacco, coal and textiles.

With regard to FleetBoston, she charges the founder of the
company made much of his fortune in the slave trade.

In a similar legal manoeuvre, survivors of the Holocaust secured
$4bn in reparations from firms which used Nazi-era slave labour.

Those companies included Deutsche Bank, conglomerate Siemens
and carmakers Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler.

If the Jews can get theirs why is there no justice for the black man?
Is it because they control the media and can wield their economic and propaganda might?
Peace

How much money are these people suing for? How much will it take for them to say “OK I'm satisfied”?

MikeU: The amount of money is not important.
What is important is the acknowlegement of the wrong committed during slavery, and the 150 years since then.
Do you think the $4bn the Jews got was an exact amount euivalent to their suffering?
No, it was more like a token sum to say "sorry."
What do you think is a "fair" amount then?
Peace

Where is this info from Tman? I would love to read more. I read a book by Randal Robinson called "The Debt" that tried to outline the case for reparations to blacks and the evidence is overwhelming when taken from a legal perspective. There are all sorts of precedences that shows that the courts are in agreement that exploited groups should be repaid. The questios is whether or not they will do it for the black man.
NE-ways, can you guys imagine how many of our black ancestors lost their lives because of AETNA. I mean, if a slave owner knew that his slave was insured don't you think he would be inclined to say, kill him if he is sick or kill a few slaves to provide some cash flow. It might seem trivial, but it probably happened...

In general, insurance policies are usually difficult to collect on because of the stipulations for pay out, so it may not have been that simple.

I wonder what the status of limitation would be under the circumstances, step up Shaggy!

Peace!!

AETNA has at least apologized (ackowledgement) I believe the case will be dismissed.

Nice try though.

What's your basis for dismissal?

The Black Prayer

Did You Make Me Black Lord ...

Lord ... Why did you make me black?

why did you make someone

the world would hold back?

Black is the color of dirty clothes,

of grimy hands and feet...

Black is the color of darkness,

of tired beaten streets...

Why did you give me thick lips,

a broad nose and kinky hair?

Why did you create someone

who receives the hated stare?

Black is the color of the bruised eye

when someone gets hurt...

Black is the color of darkness,

black is the color of dirt.

Why is my bone structure so thick,

my hips and cheeks so high?

Why are my eyes brown,

and not the color of the sky?

Why do people think I'm useless?

How come I feel so used?

Why do people see my skin

and think I should be abused?

Lord, I just don't understand...

What is it about my skin?

Why is it some people want to hate me

and not know the person within?

Black is what people are "Labeled"

when others want to keep them away...

Black is the color of shadows cast...

Black is the end of the day.

Lord you know my own people mistreat me,

and you know this just ain't right...

They don't like my hair, they don't like my

skin, as they say I'm too dark or too light!

Lord, don't you think

it's time to make a change?

Why don't you redo creation

and make everyone the same?

------------------------------------------------------------------
God's Reply:

Why did I make you black? Why did I make you black?

I made you in the color of coal
from which beautiful diamonds are formed...
I made you in the color of oil,
the black gold which keeps people warm.

Your color is the same as the rich dark soil
that grows the food you need...
Your color is the same as the black stallion and panther,Ohwhat majestic creatures indeed

All colors of the heavenly rainbow
can be found throughout every nation...
When all these colors are blended,
you become my greatest creation!

Your hair is the texture of lamb's wool,
such a beautiful creature is he...
I am the shepherd who watches them,
I will ALWAYS watch over thee!

You are the color of the midnight sky,
I put star glitter in your eyes...
There's a beautiful smile hidden behind your pain...
That's why your cheeks are so high!

You are the color of dark clouds
from the hurricanes I create in September...
I made your lips so full and thick,
so when you kiss...they will remember!

Your stature is strong,
your bone structure thick to withstand the
burden of time...
The reflection you see in the mirror,
that image that looks back, that is MINE!

So get off your knees,
look in the mirror and tell me what you see?
I didn't make you in the image of darkness...
I made you in the image of ME!

Thank God for Justice. I remember when I was shocked to hear the U.S Sec. State I think (the Black woman) say we should never get compensation. We as a delegation of students and professors walked upon hearing this. Mike U you have a nerve to question Africans and their burden. Did you question the Jews in their case? Yu get none?!
