July 27th, 2009 PLAYER FEATURE: Jorghino James- the “Black Pearl” of Harbour View ![]() The tall dark imposing figure of 15 year old Jorghino James has certainly made a mark for himself in the annals of KSAFA youth competitions. A versatile player who adapts to the needs of his team, HARBOUR VIEW, has scored fifteen times for the 2008/09 season including two hat tricks. Even when his defensive teammates were sidelined, he successfully assumed the role of central defence in a semi final encounter against Barbican. Born July 7, 1994, Jorghino attended Gordon Town All Age before moving on to Papine High. There he played Pepsi and Colts and is now getting ready to play Manning Cup. On the club scene he played for Elletson Flats (Under 13), Liguanea (Under 15) and New Kingston (Under 15 and Under 17). He has since progressed to Harbour View and has become a hit there. Jorghino plays centre forward for Harbour View but has played at central defence and midfield before. His favourite players are Navion Boyd (Tivoli) and Del Piero (Juventus) and his favourite club overseas is Chelsea. He has aspirations to play for the Jamaica National team in the future and is already a part of the National Under 15 training squad. |

A lost art in Jamaican football. I am constantly amazed at our modern players lack of application of this and other type of creative goalscoring. Back in the day, side volleys, bicycle kicks and front volleys were always in our attacking players' arsenal. The more memorable exponents were Arthur Lattimore, Cornell "Granny" Marshall (the original) and the current team manager, Howie Bell. |

HV just needs to continue grooming his technical skills more. Also, after a debut like that please teach him some PR skills, ASAP!!!!! |

It look like tappa discover a gem, or should I say a pearl lol. Dis yute need fi stay inna di program, and groomed fi tek over from the great ricardinho fuller, as the next big jamaican international balla. Mi have a good vibes bout dis yute. Tappa fi tek him go new zealand to. |

I really think Tappa should talk him along. This is the age when we need to get these yutes exposed to the international level and give them a chance to get noticed by professional scouts. Hope to see Mattocks in the senior line-up soon also. |

This just shows that there was a problem with the scouting system for the last U-17 WCup. Why Downswell didnt have this yute in the squad? |

The kid played 8 minutes against a weak Cuba team and scored a nice goal...that is great for him (and Jamaica) but I agree with jamatl until he does it for an extended period against better opposition its not fair to call him the next big thing. Hopefully Tappa will give him more time tomorrow and if he impresses then take him to New Zealand. |

Before we start the hype....how many matches has Jorginho played for the Harbour View U21s this season? Also how many matches has he played the Harbour View in the RSPL? |

Well taken goal...from being totally unmarked in the box. Great technical ability and skill but you don't get that kind of space against the better sides...good debut for the yute still. Ryan Johnson again justifies my opinion that he is a most important player for Jamaica....no chasing and retrieving that ball and crossing it...no goal. He is a perfect example of the type of work-rate and committment that Tappa needs throughout the entire Jamaica side. |

saw him play against goerges in walker cup final he is not that good. i could not believe it when it was him that scored |

Seventh Heaven! - KC schoolboy ecstatic after wonder goal Sean Williams Friday, February 24, 2012 Print this page Email A Friend! HE could barely find the words initially, but the expression on his face told the whole story. Jorginho James was in Seventh Heaven. For the 17-year-old Kingston College player who made his senior debut for his country on Wednesday night against Cuba, it was a dream come true. But to score the only goal in a 1-0 win for his country goes beyond all expectations. [Hide Description] Schoolboy Jorginho James prepares to unleash a famous scissors kick that would prove the match winner in Jamaica’s international friendly against Cuba at the National Stadium on Wednesday night. (Photo: Garfield Robinson) [Restore Description] 1/1 As an 82nd-minute substitute, James did not only exhibit confidence and maturity in his 10-minute stint, but grabbed the spotlight in the 85th minute with a stylish scissors kick from just inside the area after being fed by Ryan Johnson from out wide. In the process, he carved his name in the history books as one of the youngest players to have scored on debut for the senior Jamaica team. Another player to have scored on his senior debut is Kevin 'Pele' Wilson against Norway, also at the National Stadium. When James finally found words on his big night, this is what flowed from his lips: "I'm very overwhelmed scoring my first goal for Jamaica. I am feeling so good that maybe I cannot sleep tonight (Wednesday). I'm very happy being the youngest player on the team and to score a goal... I just want to thank God," he said. The young star should probably be concerned with whether or not he will be able to manage waking up from this almost surreal episode. While the technique of executing such a difficult shot in a tight area has to be on cue, James, with his head obviously still in the clouds, made it appear as if it's something that he repeats day in, day out. "The day before I scored a similar goal (in training), so I was confident of striking this ball in the back of the net," he said. With such a fairytale start to life at the top, James, who missed out on a place in Jamaica's Under-17 World Cup team to Mexico last year, said his focus now is on readying himself to make the transition from a schoolboy player to a full international. "I'm working hard by training hard and the transition will come. It's not game time that's hard, it's the training you put in that is," said the youngster. That transition is already in motion. Head coach Theodore Whitmore, who had summoned a top-heavy local-based squad for the Cuban friendlies, said James's introduction was timely. "We had 20 players and anyone could come on at any time, and at that time, James was the right one and he did it for his country," said Whitmore, Jamaica's two-goal hero in a 2-1 win over Japan in the France 1998 World Cup. Whitmore told the Observer that if the budding striker "could just keep his head", the future could indeed be bright. "The whole coaching staff has been talking about him. He's very confident and he does whatever he wants with the ball.... So for Jorginho to score tonight (Wednesday) is something that we have to sit and talk to him going forward," said Whitmore. For tonight's game, the senior Boyz coach has already factored in the juvenile player in his plans and beyond. "Jorginho James is certainly one who will actually be in the team (tonight) and will be travelling to New Zealand as well. Again, it's just a start for him and it's how well he can handle the pressure (that will ultimately determine how far he goes)," concluded Whitmore. Following the Cuba match-up, Jamaica are due to depart the island tomorrow for a friendly against New Zealand on Wednesday. Other senior team debutantes on Wednesday night were Joel Senior, Andrae Campbell, Jacomeno Barrett, Rohan Reid, Mitchily Waul and Dino Williams. This moment will encourage me - James Published: Friday | February 24, 2012 0 Comments Jorginho James ((second left) is hugged by family friend, Iris Barette, while his father, Thouzil (left) and mother, Mavis Francis (react), during post-match celebrations in the grandstand area at the National Stadium on Wednesday night. James, an 82nd-minute substitute, scored on debut to hand Jamaica a 1-0 win over Cuba. The teams meet in the second of a two-match series today at the Montego Bay Sports Complex. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer Having marked his debut for the Reggae Boyz with a spectacular goal against Cuba, Kingston College's (KC) schoolboy Jorgihno James is hoping that his performance will kick-start his goal of cementing his place in the Jamaica senior football team. The 17-year-old James, who netted nine goals for KC in last year's Manning Cup competition, entered the fray in the 82nd minute when he replaced overseas-based player Je-Vaughn Watson in midfield. The powerfully built player, who looked very comfortable on the ball, soon sent the small stadium crowd into a frenzy when he volleyed home a right-sided cross by Ryan Johnson from inside the area in the 87th minute, to earn the Jamaicans only their eighth friendly victory over their closest neighbours. "Before the game, I told myself that I needed to be in the squad not only for this game, but for the game against New Zealand and also for the World Cup qualifiers, and scoring the winning goal will certainly enhance my chances of achieving this goal," said James. "This moment will encourage me a lot for the future because I am going to continue to work hard in training, as the sky is the limit for me," he said. James, who plays centre forward for Harbour View in the youth leagues, began his career at theGordon Town All-Age School, before moving to Papine High, where he represented them in the Pepsi (Under-14) and Colts (Under-16) competitions. He then moved to KC, where he has been developing his skills under head coach Trevor 'Jumpy' Harris for the past three years. 'Blacks', as he's affectionately called by his teammates and family members, was very overwhelmed by his goalscoring exploit on Wednesday night. "Coming off the bench as a youngster and scoring the winning goal, it's just awesome for me and I am very happy," James admitted. He added that has been adapting well with the rigours of the Reggae Boyz training methods and is also learning a lot from the senior players. "It is not a very hard transition from high school football to playing for the national senior team because (I have been) listening to the coaches and the senior players and I have been learning a lot of new things from them," James stated. Reggae Boyz head coach, Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore, also commended James on his performance. "When I saw him for the first time he looked very confident and he does whatever he wants to do with the ball," said Whitmore. "I think he is a very good player and I just hope that he can keep his head by remaining very focused and not getting too carried away," he stated. |

I agree in regards to the NZ trip because he needs to finish high school and possibly force his way into the HV first team and continue steady development. But I would never stop my son from training with the senior team when they a training/playing right near his residence. It is a golden opportunity to LEARN!!!! |

No hype. We are happy for the young man. May he continue to improve and learn. We need all the quality ballers we can nuture. Hopefully the 17 year old Alvas Powell and Omar Holness (recovering from knee surgery) will eventually get some time with the senior squad as well. 70% of he players Downswell DID play, proved to be quality international players at the world cup. So I'm not too upset that Jorghino James didn't go. Omar Daley and Christopher 'Kemo' Nicholas didn't go to the 1999 under 17 world cup, yet they were key figures in the 2001 under 20 world cup team. Its an interesting phase for players and one that a coach will not be able to predict because things like growth spurts often make it difficult to spot (all) the gems. Thats why its so important to watch players right through to 21 or 22. You never know when they might explode. |
I fully agree that the U17's proved themselves at the world cup. They gave 2 of the best football nations in the world, in France and Argentina, 2 close matches, they played with composure and skill and couldve won both games, I was proud watching them. I am excited about the future of our football with so many talented young ballas on the island and those abroad already. Jorginho James is another big reason for us all to be excited. He has all the ability and physical attributes to be a top player in the best leagues if he has the right attitude. |
The big question is where will he be playing his club football once he turns 18 in July 2012. I am not sure if another season of schoolboy football would be appropriate, perhaps he should try to push for a spot in the Harbour View starting XI and a chance at the Digicel Cup squad. |
He is a full international and needs to be playing 1st team RSPL football for him to learn and develope further. With him being a full international so young doors will probably be open to him in Europe somewhere. Maybe youth team football in Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy or Scandanavia will be an option for him also. |
He needs to get plenty of development, he is blessed with the physical tools but it will take some time. |
Real talk Jamatl he needs to just work hard and learn where ever he chooses to play. If he works hard and is willing to learn then he has everything it takes to make it but like you said he needs time and its not good for us to put too much pressure on him too early, BUT HE IS VERY GOOD. |
How old is Neymar? Is he feeling any pressure? I'm just saying... |
That might be because he is already one of the best players in his league who has accomplished quite a bit prior to getting in the National team |
He seems to have his head screwed on. Hope he continues to improve and leave Jamaica soon for a big club overseas where he can develop further. |
Similar to Jason Johnson and other youngsters, Tappa give him a run out, but he will not be a part of the World Cup squad in June. |
How come dis yute mek to senior national team and him caan mek Harbour View RSPL starting XI and wid dem struggling in di RSPL? |
Quote: Time to end this story with this, Jorginho James.... Could it be he's our Aaron Lennon and we don't know it? Even though he doesn't start for his RSPL team, didn't make the under 20 team but somehow convince the coaching staff to include him into the senior team that's like a Huidini type move. On top of that he scored when no one could against Cuba. Who knows maybe against the USA in September we may need a Jorginho James to put one over on the USA. So we shouldn't rule Jorginho out of the mix How come dis yute can not start for HV? |

Harbour View has traditionally done a good job grooming their teenage talent, so expect the same with Jorginho James. He should be getting RSPL minutes now, because he is expected to be part of the upcoming U20 team. I will say it once again CONCACAF U20 football is not for schoolboys(high school players), these guys must have at least one season of RSPL experience under their belt before the 2013 CONCACAF U20 finals. |
Call me slow but Harbour View is entering the fourth round out of any relegation trouble but no chance of the title. Hue and Edwards are leaving on loans/trials yet Jorginho James still can not EARN a run with the 1st team? Is Harbour View that good or the national selectors saw something different? |
Maybe the national selectors simply giving him a taste of big man football like they did with other high school players over the past couple years who were not starters in senior league teams. |
